Monday evening. April 14‡

Stayed up late talking to . . . [the wife of a colleague]. How are you so optimistic she asked me? Then she started to cry. At Cambridge people ask “What do you do?” Her father thought she would be an ace in everything. She feels she’s accomplished nothing. We talked of human decency vs. accomplishment. She said she wonders if she’s really a good person.

Sunday April 14

Clancy Sigal approached me at SNCC conference after my speech, said he wanted to talk to me. Came Sunday for dinner, he I Mendy Roz spoke for about four hours. Fascinating conversation. He’s written two novels—Weekend in Dinlock—Going Away—writes for Encounter,* etc. has lived in England seven years—is a minor literary celebrity there (his words) will stay there—returned to see what US is like (was Hollywood minor writer here and travelling radical before he left) finds it qualitatively worse. Except for Negroes in South, finds country in decay. We talked about everything. Thinks Negroes are different and we argued that. Very intelligent, articulate. Roz liked him a lot. Near end almost cried out when I said I didn’t believe in death wish—he said “Then we’re a million miles apart!” Furthermore, I said, I didn’t think it important whether anyone believed in the death wish.

The Seatons brought Pat West from the airport while Clancy & Mendy were here. Clancy said he was going to Albany. Danny said (in his usual dour manner) the Negroes won’t receive you hospitably there. Myla embarrassed Danny by asking “Have you been in Albany?” We argued that for a while. Danny thinks there is a racial barrier which is impassable—he pointed to Spelman faculty—I pointed to Spelman students. Mendy said he knew six Spelman students who said they would leave if I left the college. Danny took to Clancy—they drove him back to his hotel.
